In a significant move ahead of the upcoming county cricket season, batter Saif Zaib has officially left Northamptonshire despite having a year remaining on his contract. Cricinfo understands that the 28-year-old is set to join Hampshire, where he will play a pivotal role in their ambitions to secure an immediate promotion back to Division One of the County Championship following their relegation at the end of the recent campaign.
Zaib’s departure from Wantage Road brings to a close a substantial chapter in his career. The talented batter had extended his deal with Northamptonshire early in 2025, committing his intermediate future to the club. However, following the conclusion of the most recent season, Zaib informed the club’s hierarchy of his intention to move on, stating clearly that he did not see his long-term career future remaining with Northamptonshire.
Despite subsequent discussions between the player and the club in an effort to reverse the decision, both parties ultimately agreed to part ways. Northamptonshire confirmed the departure in a statement released on Thursday morning, acknowledging that the player had made his intentions clear at the end of the season and that, despite internal efforts to retain him, he would now be leaving the club.
While Northamptonshire’s official announcement did not explicitly confirm Zaib’s next destination, Cricinfo has learned that he is bound for the south coast to link up with Hampshire. The acquisition serves as a major boost for Hampshire as they undertake a comprehensive squad rebuild aimed at navigating the competitive waters of Division Two and securing a swift return to the top flight.
Zaib arrives at Hampshire with an impressive pedigree in red-ball cricket, having established himself as one of the most reliable and prolific run-scorers on the county circuit in recent years. His standout campaign came in 2025, when he finished as the leading run-scorer in the entire country in the County Championship. During that stellar summer, he amassed an extraordinary 1425 Championship runs at a remarkable batting average of 64.77, a campaign punctuated by six brilliant centuries that underscored his capacity to anchor an innings and dominate opposition attacks.

Although he experienced a slightly quieter year during the subsequent summer, Zaib remained a vital pillar for Northamptonshire. He still managed to accumulate 856 runs at a highly respectable average of 42.80, contributing three more hundreds to his career tally as Northants narrowly missed out on promotion from Division Two. Beyond his red-ball contributions, Zaib was also an integral member of the Northamptonshire squad that triumphed in the Vitality Blast, showcasing his versatility across formats and his ability to perform under pressure in high-stakes white-ball encounters.
For Hampshire, securing Zaib’s services represents a crucial step in replacing key personnel and reshaping their batting lineup for the challenges ahead. Following their relegation from Division One, the south-coast club has been proactive in the transfer market. Zaib will join a dressing room that has already welcomed several notable additions, including Rishi Patel from Leicestershire and Fynn Hudson-Prentice from Sussex. These acquisitions are part of a deliberate strategy by Hampshire to inject fresh talent and experience into their squad, particularly in the wake of the retirements of club legends James Vince and Liam Dawson from red-ball cricket.
Reflecting on his departure, Zaib expressed deep gratitude for the years he spent with Northamptonshire, acknowledging the profound impact the club has had on his personal and professional development. In the club’s official statement, he shared his feelings about closing this chapter of his career.
"It’s been a real honour to represent Northamptonshire CCC, especially as the club has been such a big part of my life for so long," Zaib said. "I’ll always be grateful for the memories, friendships and experiences I’ve had along the way. To the supporters, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support you’ve shown me over the years. It’s meant so much to me and sharing those special moments with you is something I’ll always treasure."
Beyond his commitments in the County Championship, Zaib’s reputation as a dynamic and adaptable cricketer has increasingly drawn interest from the global franchise circuit. His profile on the south coast was further elevated earlier this summer when he spent four weeks playing for the Southern Brave during The Hundred. Eager to expand his footprint in franchise-based T20 and short-form leagues around the world, Zaib has been actively pursuing further opportunities internationally.
His hectic global schedule has continued right through the conclusion of the English domestic season. Immediately following the end of the English summer, Zaib participated in the Canada Super60 tournament. From there, his cricketing journey took him to Asia, where he is currently representing the Sudur Paschim Royals in the Nepal Premier League, further honing his skills and maintaining peak physical and mental condition ahead of his anticipated transition to Hampshire.
