The West Indies selection panel has announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming two-Test tour of Bangladesh, introducing significant changes at the top and within the bowling attack. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been withdrawn from the touring party following medical evaluations, while white-ball captain Shai Hope has been granted a rest period. Meanwhile, 23-year-old batsman Kevin Wickham has earned his maiden Test call-up after a prolific domestic run, and opening batter John Campbell makes a welcome return to the red-ball setup.
The upcoming assignment in Bangladesh marks the final chapter for the West Indies in the ongoing 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Currently positioned eighth on the points table, the Caribbean side is looking to finish the cycle on a strong note under the leadership of newly appointed Test captain Roston Chase, with Jomel Warrican serving as vice-captain.
Workload Management Sidelines Joseph and Hope
The decision to withdraw Alzarri Joseph from the Bangladesh tour came after a routine medical assessment and specialist consultation. According to a statement released by Cricket West Indies (CWI), the board elected to proactively manage the fast bowler’s workload to avert the heightened risk of injury associated with the demanding physical requirements of red-ball cricket, a decision made with Joseph’s full agreement.
While Joseph has been omitted from the Test squad, CWI confirmed that he remains available for selection in the shorter formats of the game, although the West Indies do not have any white-ball fixtures scheduled for the month immediately following their ongoing tour of India.
The medical team emphasized that the unique conditions of a two-Test series in Bangladesh—which typically require fast bowlers to sustain repeated, high-intensity spells over extended periods—present a significantly greater physical burden and injury risk than limited-overs formats. Consequently, Joseph will continue to work closely with the CWI medical staff and specialists to ensure a safe and comprehensive return to the longer format in the future.
Allrounder Keemo Paul has been named as Joseph’s direct replacement in the Test squad. This development follows a period of turbulence regarding Joseph’s Test availability. He missed the preceding home series against Pakistan for personal reasons, after which head coach Daren Sammy stated that the fast bowler had declined selection. Joseph subsequently responded in a sports media appearance, describing Sammy’s public comments as controversial and lacking necessary context.
In addition to Joseph’s absence, star white-ball captain Shai Hope has been rested from the tour. CWI stated that Hope’s omission comes after an extended run of matches across all three international formats, with the board prioritizing his overall workload and personal wellness as the team looks ahead to the crucial One Day International World Cup qualifiers scheduled for February 2027.
Wickham Rewarded for Domestic Brilliance as Campbell Returns
The standout selection in the squad is young batter Kevin Wickham, whose maiden Test call-up is the direct result of an extraordinary run of form in the West Indies Championship, the regional four-day competition. Representing Barbados, Wickham etched his name into the record books by scoring three centuries in as many consecutive innings. His sequence of scores—105, 153, and an unbeaten 108—elevated him to the position of the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament, finishing with a total of 393 runs at a remarkable average of 78.60. Across his overall first-class career spanning 25 matches, Wickham maintains a solid average of 40.88, underscored by six centuries.
Opening batter John Campbell also returns to the Test fold after successfully recovering from the hamstring injury that forced him to miss the home series against Pakistan. Kirk McKenzie, who had been drafted into the squad as Campbell’s replacement for the Pakistan matches, has made way without having the opportunity to feature in a game during that series.
The fast-bowling department for the Bangladesh tour will rely on the experience of Kemar Roach alongside Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph, supported by seam-bowling allrounders Keemo Paul and Justin Greaves. The spin-bowling department features specialist options in Jomel Warrican and Joshua Bishop, with additional support provided by allrounders Kavem Hodge and captain Roston Chase.
Final Push in the World Test Championship
Head coach Daren Sammy reflected on the team’s objectives as they approach the conclusion of the current World Test Championship cycle. At the commencement of the cycle, the team established a clear goal to finish within the top half of the tournament rankings.
"At the start of this World Test Championship cycle we set ourselves goals, and one of them was to finish in the top half of the rankings," Sammy noted. "Winning this series would move us closer to it. Playing Bangladesh in their own conditions will be challenging, and we’re ready for that."
Preparations for the tour are already underway. Test squad members who are not currently participating in the ongoing T20 international series in India have commenced their training sessions at the Super Kings Academy in Chennai under the guidance of assistant coach Floyd Reifer. Wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo is set to join the training group following the conclusion of the first T20I match in Lucknow.
The full West Indies touring party is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on October 18. They will immediately enter a preparatory phase, which includes a three-day warm-up match in Dhaka scheduled from October 22 to October 24.
The battle for the two-Test series will commence shortly thereafter. The first Test match is set to begin on October 28 in Dhaka, followed by the second and final Test starting on November 5 in Sylhet.
