Hampshire batter Joe Weatherley has signed a new contract with the county that will last through until the end of the 2028 season, securing his services for the foreseeable future as one of the most reliable and dynamic top-order batsmen in the domestic game.
The 29-year-old enters this new chapter of his career following a stellar individual campaign in the shortest format of the sport, having established himself as the leading run-scorer in last season’s T20 Blast. Across the tournament, Weatherley accumulated an impressive 591 runs at a remarkable average just under 50, anchoring Hampshire’s batting lineup and steering them deep into the latter stages of the competition with his consistent brilliance at the crease.
His standout performances reached a crescendo on Finals Day at Edgbaston, an occasion that cemented his reputation as a big-match player even as ultimate team glory narrowly eluded the club. In the semi-final encounter against the Notts Outlaws, Weatherley delivered a masterclass in controlled aggression, scoring an unbeaten 88 to drive his side toward victory. Refusing to slow down, he followed up that heroic knock with another commanding innings of 75 in the final. Despite his individual heroics, the Hampshire Hawks ultimately fell short, losing the showcase match to the Northamptonshire Steelbacks.
Nevertheless, despite the bitter disappointment of the final defeat, it was a record-breaking day for the talented batter. Weatherley etched his name into the history books of domestic T20 cricket by becoming the first player ever to score two fifties on a single Finals Day, showcasing his immense stamina, mental resilience, and technical mastery under the most intense pressure imaginable.
Weatherley is a proud product of Hampshire’s esteemed academy system, having worked his way through the junior ranks before making his senior debut for the club in 2016. Over the intervening years, he has developed into a cornerstone of the county setup, making a total of 211 appearances for the club across all formats of the game, including first-class, List A, and T20 cricket.
His consistency over more than a decade has elevated him into rare statistical company within the county’s modern history. Weatherley currently stands as Hampshire’s third-leading run-scorer in T20 cricket, having amassed a remarkable 2,741 runs in the format. He sits in esteemed territory on that all-time list, trailing only club legends James Vince and Michael Carberry.
Reflecting on his decision to commit the prime years of his career to the county where he learned his trade, Weatherley expressed immense gratitude and enthusiasm for the journey ahead.
"I’m really pleased to extend my contract with Hampshire," Weatherley said, speaking after putting pen to paper on the multi-year agreement.
"This club has been my home for twenty years and over ten years professionally, and I love playing my cricket and being part of the dressing room here. We’ve got a great group of players, and I’m motivated to contribute across formats and continue our success, particularly in white ball cricket, where we’ve been in knockouts and finals regularly, and bring some trophies home."
Weatherley’s reputation as a dependable white-ball operator has increasingly drawn attention beyond his exploits with Hampshire. In last summer’s edition of The Hundred, his stock rose even higher when he was signed as a late addition to the Birmingham Phoenix squad. He was brought into the franchise setup to serve as a replacement for the injured Jacob Bethell, seamlessly adjusting to the high-stakes environment of the marquee competition and proving his adaptability among some of the best players in the global game.
Throughout his distinguished career at the Rose and Bowl, Weatherley has already tasted significant silverware, contributing directly to Hampshire’s triumphs on the domestic stage. His trophy cabinet includes memorable victories in the 2018 Royal London Cup and the 2022 Vitality Blast, experiences that have cultivated a winning mentality within the dressing room and fueled his ongoing hunger for further success.
With his long-term future now secured until the end of the 2028 season, Hampshire supporters and coaching staff alike can look forward to seeing the experienced batter continue to anchor the innings, mentor younger prospects coming through the academy, and spearhead the county’s ongoing pursuit of domestic silverware across both red-ball and white-ball formats.
