India top-order batter Punam Raut has announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect, concluding a distinguished career that spanned more than a decade at the highest level of the sport. Raut, who celebrated her 37th birthday on Wednesday, represented India across all three formats, playing four Tests, 73 One-Day Internationals, and 35 Twenty20 Internationals between 2009 and 2021.

The announcement, shared via an emotional post on Instagram, marks the end of an era for a player who served as a dependable anchor at the top of the Indian batting order through a transformative period for women’s cricket in the country. Reflecting on her journey, Raut expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to represent her nation on the global stage for over twelve years.

"After much thought and reflection, I have decided to retire from international cricket in all formats of the game," Raut wrote in her statement. "Representing India has been the greatest honour of my life. Cricket has been more than just a sport – it has shaped my character, taught me resilience, and given me memories that I will cherish forever. Every time I wore the India jersey, I did so with immense pride and gratitude. Wearing the India jersey was a dream that became a reality, and I will always be grateful for the trust and support I received."

Throughout her international career, Raut established herself as a resilient and technically sound batter, particularly in the 50-over format. She was most prolific in One-Day Internationals, where she accumulated 2,299 runs at an impressive average of 34.83. Her ODI resume features three centuries and 15 half-centuries, underlining her consistency and ability to anchor innings against top-tier bowling attacks. Her contributions on the global stage were significant, highlighted by her selection to three ICC Women’s ODI World Cup squads in 2009, 2013, and 2017.

The 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup held in England remains one of the defining chapters of Raut’s career and a watershed moment for the sport in India. During that memorable tournament, Raut played a pivotal role in India’s run to the final. She etched her name into the record books with a magnificent century against Australia in a crucial league match in Bristol. She followed up that stellar performance by top-scoring for India in the final against the hosts at Lord’s, compiling a gritty 86 runs under intense pressure. Although India fell agonizingly short of lifting the trophy that day, the tournament catalyzed a massive shift in the landscape of women’s cricket in the sub-continent.

"The 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup will always remain one of the defining moments of my career," Raut reflected in her retirement note. "Although we fell just short of the trophy, that tournament transformed women’s cricket in India, inspired a generation of young girls, and changed the future of our game."

Among her numerous individual milestones, Raut was involved in one of the most remarkable statistical feats in the history of women’s limited-overs cricket. During a quadrangular series match against Ireland in Potchefstroom in 2017, Raut and her teammate Deepti Sharma shattered records by constructing a monumental, world-record opening partnership of 320 runs. Raut anchored the innings brilliantly before retiring hurt after scoring 109 runs off 116 deliveries, while Sharma went on to amass a historic 188 runs off 160 balls.

Raut’s journey in Test cricket, though brief in terms of matches played, also showcased her exceptional temperament and capacity for big scores. Having started her career in the longest format with a duck, she quickly found her footing and demonstrated her class by smashing a magnificent 130 runs in only her third Test appearance, playing against South Africa in Mysore in 2014.

In the shortest format of the game, Raut proved to be a valuable asset during the formative years of women’s T20 international cricket. Over the course of 35 T20Is, she scored 719 runs at an average of 27.65 and a strike rate of 92.17, registering four half-centuries. Her adaptability was evident as she represented India across four editions of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, participating in the 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 tournaments. Notable performances in these global events included a match-winning, unbeaten knock of 54 against arch-rivals Pakistan in 2009, and a steady 56 off 52 balls against the West Indies in 2014.

Beyond her national commitments, Raut took time to acknowledge the vital role played by her domestic roots in shaping her professional ethos and technical foundation. She reserved special praise for the Mumbai Cricket Association, whose structured pathway and competitive environment nurtured her talent during her formative years.

"My sincere thanks to the Mumbai Cricket Association for believing in me during my formative years," she stated. "The opportunities and guidance I received there laid the foundation of my cricketing journey."

Raut’s final appearance in the blue of India came during the historic day-night Test match against Australia at Carrara in 2021, a hard-fought encounter that ended in a draw. In typical fashion, she contributed resiliently with scores of 36 and 41 not out, providing a fittingly determined conclusion to an international career defined by grit, longevity, and profound dedication to the Indian jersey.
