SHARJAH — Afghanistan’s dominant run through the UAE ODI tri-series culminated in a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the final at Sharjah on Friday, reinforcing their growing stature in international cricket. While spin maestro Rashid Khan rightly dominated the headlines with another stellar performance, head coach Richard Pybus was quick to emphasize that the team’s success was built on a collective bowling effort and a harmonious squad environment.

Zimbabwe were restricted to a modest total of 169 in 43.3 overs, a target that Afghanistan chased down comfortably in 34.3 overs, reaching 170 for 3. Opener Ibrahim Zadran anchored the chase with an unbeaten 70, supported by captain Rahmat Shah, who contributed a steady 43. Yet, the tone of the match was set earlier in the day by the bowling attack, spearheaded once again by Rashid.

The leg-spinner claimed 3 for 41, extending a remarkable personal milestone. Rashid has now picked up at least three wickets in each of his last six One-Day Internationals, a streak dating back to August. In achieving this feat, he joins Pakistan fast-bowling legend Umar Gul as only the second bowler in international cricket history to secure three-plus wickets in six consecutive ODI appearances.

Despite Rashid’s extraordinary run of form, Pybus was keen to shift some of the spotlight onto the broader bowling unit, praising their diversity and ability to operate in tandem.

"The spin bowling has been excellent throughout the week," Pybus said following the final. "We have some fantastic spinners. Rashid has been phenomenal, but he’s not on his own. He’s been supported by a very diverse and a very competent bowling unit, and they end up taking wickets for each other, which is one of the great things."

The victory also marked another milestone for Rahmat Shah, who recently assumed the Test captaincy. Under his leadership, Afghanistan has now secured seven consecutive victories in the ODI format. Pybus expressed high praise for Rahmat’s calm demeanor, authority, and inclusive leadership style, noting that the captain has seamlessly carried the additional responsibility of leading from the front with the bat.

"[Rahmat] is wonderful as captain. He’s a very calm, assured player. He leads with authority. He is very inclusive. He’s got a happy team," Pybus said. "I think it is equally important as a captain to carry that responsibility with the bat. We have been seeing it since the Ireland tour. His performance during the [one-off] Test match didn’t get the credit that it deserved, but he was outstanding with his century and the half-century. He has had seven ODI wins on the trot."

While acknowledging the honeymoon period of Rahmat’s tenure, Pybus remained grounded about the challenges ahead, expressing full confidence in the skipper’s long-term leadership.

"It’s not always going to be as sweet as that, but he’s made a really great start, and I’ve got absolutely no doubt he’ll continue to lead the team in a very positive and inspiring way," Pybus added.

Pybus: Playing top sides regularly ‘really critical’

Looking at the broader trajectory of Afghan cricket, Pybus highlighted the structural hurdles the team faces as an evolving side. He argued that the national team can only unlock its full potential across all three formats if they are granted more frequent fixtures against top-ranked Full-Member nations.

"We have got some great players. We need to build a great team," Pybus said. "The side is an evolving team. We don’t get the quality of opportunity with regards to some of the other Full-Member sides in terms of being able to play the top sides consistently, which I think is really critical for our development as a side."

At the same time, the coach stressed that Afghanistan must remain intensely focused on the opponents directly in front of them, noting the unpredictable and competitive nature of associate and developing cricket.

"We have still got to turn up and do a really great job against the sides that we play against. Bangladesh are a very dangerous side, and Zimbabwe, they may have struggled to beat us, but in the first match of this series, Zimbabwe turned over Bangladesh and put in a really comprehensive performance. So I don’t want to take anything away from our guys."

The tri-series in the UAE also posed significant environmental challenges, most notably the grueling heat and humidity. During daytime fixtures, players from multiple teams visibly struggled, with several athletes dropping to their haunches after strenuous spells of running. Pybus credited the players’ resilience and the behind-the-scenes efforts of the support staff for maintaining squad fitness throughout the campaign.

"Credit to the boys for being able to cope with the heat and the humidity. They have been exceptional this week," Pybus said. "Credit to the backroom staff for the work which they put in to make sure that all the guys are fit and having a full squad to be able to select from. I think that’s really positive. It was a testament to their conditioning work."

The successful tri-series campaign caps off a productive period for Afghanistan cricket, which included positive outings in Ireland and impressive individual and collective performances over the past few weeks in the UAE. During the recent Test match against Bangladesh, Rahmat and Sediqullah Atal both notched centuries, while fast bowlers Mohammad Saleem and Yameen Ahmadzai delivered disciplined, lengthy spells. This was followed by Rashid and Ibrahim’s starring roles in the tri-series.

Pybus pointed to this internal competition and shared accountability as key indicators of a maturing squad capable of adapting to diverse global conditions.

"Guys really get stuck into their work. They’re not handing responsibility for other players to come in and pick up the pieces where they have not executed on what they need to do in their role," Pybus said. "So that’s really pleasing. Just the consistency across the board from the seam bowling, bowling at Abu Dhabi, bowling here on the flat wickets, I think we’ve been pretty good. I’m looking forward to the T20 guys and seeing what we’ve got in the squad there. We’ve got competition for places."
