Kieron Pollard Opts Out of Joburg Super Kings Deal Ahead of SA20

Kieron Pollard has officially withdrawn from his playing contract with the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) ahead of the upcoming SA20 season, in a decision that comes shortly after his high-profile appointment as the new head coach of the Mumbai Indians for the Indian Premier League.

Cricinfo has independently confirmed with the Joburg Super Kings franchise that Pollard has communicated his decision to step away from the team. Following this development, JSK are now permitted to sign a replacement player from outside the auction pool to fill the vacancy left in their squad.

The move avoids a potentially awkward scenario where the veteran all-rounder would have featured against a franchise belonging to the Mumbai Indians group, with whom he shares a long and deeply established multi-league association. Just days prior, on Saturday, Pollard was officially unveiled as the new head coach of the Mumbai Indians for the 2027 edition of the Indian Premier League, stepping into a prominent leadership role with the five-time IPL champions.

Pollard’s ties to the broader Mumbai Indians organization are extensive and span multiple continents and franchise leagues. Prior to this coaching appointment, the 39-year-old stalwart turned out for MI Cape Town during the 2024 and 2025-26 seasons of the SA20. Across 12 matches for the Cape Town-based franchise, Pollard contributed 207 runs at an explosive strike rate of 171.07, showcasing his enduring utility as a middle-order power hitter. However, MI Cape Town ultimately chose not to bid for him at the auction for the subsequent season, paving the way for other franchises to enter the fray.

At the subsequent player auction, the Joburg Super Kings secured Pollard’s services with a winning bid of Rand 1.5 million, an investment worth approximately $90,272 USD. The acquisition was viewed as a major coup for JSK, given Pollard’s immense experience, leadership credentials, and historic status in the shortest format of the game.

Despite transitioning into coaching roles, Pollard remains remarkably close to a historic individual milestone in T20 cricket. He stands just a single run short of becoming only the second batter in the history of the sport to reach 15,000 career runs in T20 matches, a landmark achieved previously only by England’s Jos Buttler.

Pollard continues to maintain an active playing career in select franchise leagues around the globe. Most recently, the veteran campaigner featured for the Trinbago Knight Riders during the Caribbean Premier League in August and September. His globe-trotting career within the Mumbai Indians ecosystem also includes stints representing MI New York in Major League Cricket between 2023 and 2026, and turning out for MI Emirates in the ILT20 from 2023 through the 2025-26 season. Furthermore, his coaching portfolio within the group extends to the men’s Hundred competition, where he serves as the coach for MI London.

The 2027 edition of the SA20 is scheduled to get underway on January 17. In the lead-up to the tournament opener, Pollard will find himself stationed at the auction table in his new capacity as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians, navigating the strategic demands of squad construction before shifting his focus toward the upcoming IPL cycle. With his departure from the Joburg Super Kings roster now finalized, JSK turns its attention toward securing a suitable replacement to bolster their lineup ahead of the competitive South African franchise league.
