The Punjab Kings have been hit by a significant double departure ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League cycle, with fast-bowling coach James Hopes and fielding coach Brad Haddin officially leaving their respective positions within the franchise’s support staff.

The high-profile exits leave head coach Ricky Ponting with a massive vacuum to fill in his backroom team. This latest structural disruption compounds an already challenging period for the franchise’s coaching setup, following the departure of spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule. Bahutule, who expertly oversaw the spin department during the IPL 2026 campaign, recently transitioned to take over the exact same spin-bowling coaching role with the senior India men’s national team ahead of their international assignments.

The departures of Hopes and Haddin mark the end of notable tenures with the franchise. James Hopes, a trusted tactical ally of Ricky Ponting, brought a wealth of experience to the Punjab Kings. Hopes had previously worked alongside his former Australia teammate Ponting during their successful stint together at the Delhi Capitals before making the move to the Punjab Kings, where he spent two crucial seasons refining the franchise’s pace attack. Brad Haddin’s roots with the franchise run even deeper, having served as a vital part of the Punjab Kings backroom staff since 2022. Haddin initially arrived during the tenure of former head coach Trevor Bayliss and remained a constant, stabilizing presence through subsequent leadership transitions.

Both seasoned Australian coaches have swiftly transitioned to new high-profile domestic responsibilities in their home country. Hopes and Haddin are presently heavily involved in the ongoing domestic Sheffield Shield action. Hopes is currently directing his focus toward coaching duties in Queensland’s clash against Western Australia in Perth, while Haddin is overseeing New South Wales as they face off against Tasmania in Sydney. Their immediate return to elite Australian domestic red-ball cricket highlights their standing in the global coaching ecosystem, but it leaves Punjab Kings management scrambling to assemble a competitive and cohesive support staff ahead of future tournament preparations.

The coaching overhaul comes at a delicate time for the Punjab Kings franchise, which continues its historic quest for an elusive maiden Indian Premier League title. Despite boasting formidable squads over the years, the franchise has never managed to lift the coveted IPL trophy, though they have come agonizingly close on multiple occasions. The closest they ever came to ultimate glory was during the 2014 season, when they put up a stellar campaign only to fall short in a thrilling final against the Kolkata Knight Riders. More recently, they reached the summit clash again in 2025, but were ultimately denied the championship title after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final.

Ricky Ponting took charge as the franchise’s head coach prior to the start of the IPL 2025 season, and his appointment yielded immediate positive results. The team found instant success under his astute tactical guidance, establishing a winning culture right away. Ponting initially oversaw an outstanding, blistering start to the IPL 2026 season as well, with the Punjab Kings mounting an impressive campaign that saw them string together six consecutive victories, alongside one washed-out fixture due to weather.

However, the team’s momentum dramatically evaporated in the second half of the tournament. After dominating the early stages of the competition, the Punjab Kings completely lost their way, managing just a single victory while suffering six consecutive defeats in the latter half of the league stage. That steep decline proved fatal to their playoff ambitions, as they ultimately missed out on securing a top-four finish. With the exits of Hopes, Haddin, and Bahutule, Ponting and the franchise hierarchy face an arduous rebuilding task to ensure the team can stabilize its coaching infrastructure, recapture its early-season brilliance, and finally break its long-standing championship drought.
