New Zealand Announces Split Squad for India ODIs as Star Returnees and Test Preparations Shape Selection

New Zealand Cricket has officially announced a 21-player squad across a unique split-series format for the upcoming five-match One-Day International series against India. The selectors have engineered a tactical transition plan that allows a core group of players to contest the opening three matches before several members depart for Wellington to begin meticulous preparations for the subsequent Test series at the Basin Reserve.

The squad announcements bring notable returns alongside calculated omissions. Dynamic top-order hitter Finn Allen and express pace spearhead Lockie Ferguson are back in the ODI mix for the first time since late 2023. Allen last featured for the Black Caps immediately preceding the ODI World Cup cycle, while Ferguson showcased his fiery pace during the global tournament itself. Their inclusions bolster New Zealand’s firepower as they prepare to test themselves against a formidable Indian outfit in front of passionate home crowds.

Also making a welcome return to the international setup is all-rounder Rachin Ravindra. Ravindra is set to rejoin the team for the white-ball fixtures after being forced to miss the preceding T20 international series against India. His absence from the T20 matches stems from an unfortunate shoulder injury—specifically a dislocated right shoulder—sustained during a promotional shoot last month. His recovery timeline has aligned well enough to permit his inclusion in the first part of the ODI campaign, offering a major boost to the team’s middle order and spin options.

However, the selection panel was forced to leave several key personnel on the sidelines due to ongoing rehabilitation programs. New Zealand Cricket confirmed that pace-bowling talents Zak Foulkes, troubled by a hip flexor issue, Will O’Rourke, dealing with a calf strain, and Ben Sears, recovering from an ankle injury, were not considered for selection. Their absence highlights the physical toll of modern international cricket schedules, forcing the team management to look deeper into domestic reservoirs to construct a competitive squad.

The decision to split the squad hinges on the overlapping demands of white-ball fixtures and the World Test Championship points at stake in the red-ball arena. Seven fresh players will rotate into the group for the final two ODIs, expanding the total player pool to 21 for the series. This strategic pivot ensures that players earmarked for the longest format can transition to the capital early.

The logistics of this split roster have also necessitated adjustments within the coaching and support staff. Head coach Rob Walter will maintain overall leadership of the white-ball group, assisted by bowling coach Jacob Oram. Notably, this series marks the final New Zealand assignment for departing batting coach Luke Ronchi. Ronchi will conclude his tenure with the national side before officially assuming his new role as head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the men’s Australian Big Bash League.

Following the conclusion of the third ODI, Ronchi, Oram, and strength and conditioning coach Chris Donaldson will travel directly to Wellington. This trio will lead the early Test preparation block alongside newly appointed Black Caps batting coach BJ Watling. Meanwhile, head coach Rob Walter, supported by Northern Districts men’s strength and conditioning coach Corey Miles, will stay behind with the modified ODI squad for the fourth and fifth fixtures. Additional coaching support for the final leg of the white-ball series is set to be announced by New Zealand Cricket in due course.

Refining the squad strategy, head coach Rob Walter emphasized the dual objectives of competitiveness and forward-looking preparation. With the next ODI World Cup looming precisely one year away, Walter views the upcoming matches against India as an invaluable litmus test for the national side.

Walter noted that bringing in seven fresh faces for the final two games provides a critical opportunity to stress-test the team’s bench strength against a world-class opponent. At the same time, the management has carefully balanced these white-ball aspirations with the imperative requirements of red-ball cricket. Every Test match carries profound implications for championship points, making the early extraction of select squad members a necessary step to secure adequate preparation ahead of the first Test against India, which commences on November 19 at the Basin Reserve.

Among the beneficiaries of the squad rotation are newly contracted Black Caps Matt Fisher and Nick Kelly, both of whom have earned call-ups for the final two ODIs. Wicketkeeping responsibilities will also see a transition; with Test captain Tom Latham slated to leave the ODI setup after the third match to switch focus to the red-ball series, Mitch Hay and Tim Seifert will step in as the primary keeping options for the closing encounters of the white-ball leg.
