DHAKA — Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first against the West Indies in the opening match of the Test series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, but the morning session was heavily defined by a mix of significant selection news and late injury drama for the hosts.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, leading the Bangladesh side, had no hesitation in opting to put runs on the board after calling correctly at the toss. However, the biggest talking point ahead of the first ball was the unfortunate absence of seasoned campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim. The 106-Test veteran was a notable exclusion from the starting XI after picking up a hand injury during a net training session on the eve of the match.

For Rahim, the setback is a frustrating echo of recent history. The last time the experienced batsman missed a Test match was also against the West Indies due to an injury sustained during Bangladesh’s tour of the Caribbean in late 2024. With Rahim sidelined, the Bangladesh team management turned to Towhid Hridoy to fill the void in the middle order, handing the talented youngster an opportunity to make his mark in the longest format of the game.

The forced absence of Rahim was not the only change to the home side’s lineup. Bangladesh made a total of two alterations from their previous configurations, bringing in fast bowler Shoriful Islam alongside Hridoy. Ebadot Hossain also made way, leaving the bowling attack with a balanced mix of pace and spin tailored for the conditions in Dhaka.

Recognizing the traditional nature of the pitch at the venue, Bangladesh opted for a heavy spin-bowling contingent, naming three specialist spinners in the playing eleven: Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, and Nayeem Hasan. They will be supported by the pace-bowling duo of Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam, giving Shanto plenty of tactical variety as the match progresses into the later days.

WI hand Bishop his Test debut; Mushfiqur out with injury as Bangladesh bat

On the visiting side, West Indies captain Roston Chase led a team sheet featuring a major milestone alongside strategic changes in personnel. The tourists handed a Test debut to 26-year-old left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop, who comes into the side as part of a three-pronged spin attack that also features experienced campaigners Jomel Warrican and Chase himself.

Bishop’s inclusion comes at the expense of veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach, who was left out of the playing eleven for this encounter. Instead, the West Indies opted for a pace attack anchored by the express pace of Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales, with allrounder Justin Greaves rounding out the seam options to provide crucial balance and support.

The Caribbean side also adjusted their personnel behind the stumps. Amir Jangoo has been entrusted with wicketkeeping duties for the match, stepping in while regular gloveman Shai Hope opted to skip the ongoing tour after last featuring for the Test side in August.

With both teams locking in their strategies under overcast skies in Dhaka, the stage was set for an intriguing battle between Bangladesh’s established batting core—featuring openers Shadman Islam and Tanzid Hasan, alongside Mominul Haque and Shanto—and a varied West Indian attack featuring the fiery pace of Joseph and the probing left-arm spin of debutant Bishop.

As play got underway, Bangladesh’s opening pair took guard to lay the foundation, while the West Indies bowlers looked to exploit any early moisture or movement through the air to put the hosts under pressure in the opening session of what promises to be a hard-fought series opener.
