New Zealand fast bowler Will O’Rourke will miss the upcoming home series against India as he continues to rehabilitate following injuries to his left hamstring and calf. O’Rourke is resting as a precautionary measure, with New Zealand keeping one eye on the four-Test tour of Australia scheduled for December and January.
The 25-year-old speedster has been out of action since late June, when he sustained a hamstring tear on the final day of the third Test against England in Nottingham. His recovery has since been complicated by a subsequent calf strain picked up during training in August, further delaying his competitive return.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter acknowledged the significance of the decision while speaking about the team’s overarching strategy for their pace bowling resources.
"It’s obviously disappointing for Will to have to miss such a marquee tour at home against India," New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said. "He was set to feature in both the ODI and Test series, but following subsequent discussions, we all agreed it was best for him to take some more time to rehabilitate both injuries and safely build up his bowling loads."
Walter emphasized that the team’s management is looking at the broader picture, particularly given the rigorous demands of upcoming international fixtures. The Black Caps are prioritizing the long-term fitness of their premier fast-bowling assets, ensuring they are fully prepared for the challenges lying ahead in the Southern Hemisphere summer.
"Our pace bowling resources will be critical over the next few months so we’re taking a conservative approach to Will’s return to ensure he’s fully fit before he takes the field again," Walter added.

Looking ahead at a potential timeline for his return, the coaching staff has mapped out a cautious progression for the young fast bowler. The plan involves domestic cricket before stepping back onto the international stage, provided his rehabilitation proceeds without any further setbacks.
"Ideally he’ll be able to return for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December, and in a perfect world he’ll be ready to go for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on December 9," Walter said.
O’Rourke’s young international career has faced several hurdles, with his recent history pockmarked by injury setbacks. He previously spent seven months sidelined due to a back stress fracture before making his return in April during New Zealand’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh. Following that layoff, he immediately stepped back into red-ball cricket, playing all three Tests during New Zealand’s tour of England in June. However, the heavy workload culminated in the hamstring tear on the final day at Trent Bridge, halting his momentum once again.
The timing of O’Rourke’s absence is a notable blow for New Zealand as they prepare for a comprehensive all-format home assignment against India. New Zealand are set to announce their squad for the India series on Sunday, with selectors forced to look elsewhere to fill the void left by the injured fast bowler.
The sprawling series against India is set to get underway later this month and run through the better part of two months. The tour begins with a five-match T20I series scheduled from October 22 to November 1. Following the conclusion of the shortest format, the two sides will transition into a five-match ODI series running from November 4 to November 15.
The marquee portion of the tour will conclude with a two-match Test series. The first Test is scheduled to be played in Wellington from November 19 to 23, followed by the second and final Test in Christchurch from November 27 to December 1. While O’Rourke will watch these encounters from the sidelines, the New Zealand management team remains focused on getting him back to peak physical condition in time for the trans-Tasman rivalry in Australia.
