Pietermaritzburg — In a display of fast bowling that will be talked about for years to come, KZN Inland fast bowler Chad Laycock etched his name into the history books during a CSA Pro20 Cup encounter against the Titans in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday. Laycock became the first South African and only the fourth man in the history of men’s T20 cricket to claim five wickets in a single over, producing a spell of breathtaking brilliance that culminated in career-best figures of 6 for 26.

The extraordinary sequence unfolded during the 19th over of the Titans’ innings. Laycock, demonstrating incredible control and variations of pace, completely dismantled the batting lineup to bring an abrupt halt to the Titans’ momentum. The innings, which had been tracking toward an even more formidable total, was suddenly wrapped up at 204, having stood comfortably at 193 for 4 before the over commenced.

Laycock began his historic over by dismissing Leus du Plooy. Rather than settling for a standard breakthrough, the young fast bowler accelerated into a devastating rhythm, removing Dayyaan Galiem, Aphiwe Mnyanda, Janco Smit, and Esosa Aihevba off the subsequent four deliveries. This remarkable feat meant Laycock secured four wickets in four consecutive deliveries, setting a new South African T20 record. In the broader landscape of T20 internationals among Full Member teams, four wickets in four balls is an exclusive club that has previously been achieved by only a select few world-class operators, namely Lasith Malinga, Rashid Khan, Curtis Campher, and Jason Holder.

Laycock’s phenomenal over was the climax of an already impressive bowling display. Earlier in the match, he had provided KZN Inland with their vital first breakthrough by dismissing Lhuan-dre Pretorius for a fluent 81 off just 36 balls in the ninth over, halting a dangerous 112-run opening partnership that had threatened to take the game away from KZN Inland entirely.

When the dust settled on the Titans’ innings, Laycock’s final figures of 6 for 26 not only represented his personal best in the format but also broke the record for the best bowling figures in the history of the CSA Pro20 Cup. He surpassed the previous benchmark set by Beuran Hendricks, who took 6 for 29 back in 2014. Furthermore, Laycock’s achievement elevated him into an elite global echelon of bowlers who have taken five wickets in a single over in men’s T20 cricket.

Before Tuesday, the rare feat had been accomplished by only three other men globally. Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain was among the first, achieving the milestone for UCB-BCB XI against Abahani Limited during the 2013-14 Victory Day T20 Cup. India’s Abhimanyu Mithun replicated the achievement in the semi-final of the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, turning in the spell for Karnataka against Haryana. More recently, Indonesia’s Gede Priandana accomplished the feat against Cambodia in December 2025, standing as the sole player, male or female, to do so in a recognized T20 International.

Despite Laycock’s heroics with the ball and a valiant effort with the bat later in the evening, the magical over was not enough to secure a victory for KZN Inland. Facing a daunting target of 205, KZN Inland fought hard but ultimately finished their chase at 183 for 6, falling short by 21 runs. Laycock himself attempted to drag his side over the line with the bat, chipping in with an aggressive and unbeaten 31 runs, but the total proved just out of reach.

With this hard-fought victory, the Titans successfully extended their formidable unbeaten run in the competition to six matches, reinforcing their position at the summit of the table. Even in defeat, however, the day undoubtedly belonged to Chad Laycock, whose historic over and record-breaking figures will remain a defining highlight of the South African domestic cricket season.
