Stephen England’s newly appointed Test head coach, Stephen Fleming, has wasted no time shaping his backroom staff ahead of the demanding winter tour of South Africa, bringing in trusted lieutenants James Foster and Eric Simons from the Chennai Super Kings.

The high-profile appointments were confirmed on Monday by Rob Key, the England Men’s managing director, alongside a wider restructuring of the national performance pathways. Key also announced that Richard Dawson, the outgoing head coach of Glamorgan, has joined the red-ball coaching set-up as part of a dual appointment that will see him take on the responsibilities of England’s elite national spin bowling lead. Meanwhile, Marcus Trescothick has been retained on the coaching staff following a successful interim stint over the summer, where he oversaw a dominant 3-0 Test series victory against Pakistan.

The shake-up extends across both formats of the game. Brendon McCullum, who transitioned exclusively to the white-ball coaching role following his departure from the Test position in July, has retained a familiar and trusted team for the upcoming tour of Australia. McCullum will continue his preparations for the 2027 50-over World Cup with former New Zealand team-mates Jeetan Patel and Tim Southee by his side, alongside Sarah Taylor and Kevin Pietersen, who remains in his specialist mentor role.

Key explained that the philosophy behind the split-coaching framework and the extensive backroom overhaul is designed to give both Fleming and McCullum the exact personnel they believe can deliver sustained success. For Fleming, that strategy meant drawing heavily on his vast and successful experience within the Indian Premier League. Simons, a former head coach of the South Africa national team, is set to leave his long-standing position with the Chennai Super Kings to take up his new role with England, bringing with him eight years of close collaboration alongside Fleming at the franchise. Foster, the former Essex and England wicketkeeper, has also worked closely within that environment, having served Chennai as their fielding coach during the 2026 season.

The web of IPL connections could have been even broader. Michael Hussey, the long-serving batting coach for Chennai Super Kings, was heavily courted by Fleming earlier in the year to join the England Test coaching setup ahead of the upcoming international calendar. However, Hussey ultimately turned down the approach and is reportedly set to take up a part-time role with Australia instead, leaving Chennai ahead of the 2027 IPL season.

For Dawson, the move to the international stage marks a significant career milestone after putting his name forward for the top England coaching job. He now steps down from his tenure at Glamorgan, where he earned widespread plaudits by guiding the county to promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2025 and successfully securing their top-flight status through the subsequent season.

"Our gain is Glamorgan’s loss," Key said of Dawson’s appointment. "To go back into county cricket, where often you’re not at the most-resourced club in the world, to do what Richard’s done has been brilliant."

Dawson admitted that leaving the county side was a difficult choice, noting in a statement released by Glamorgan that it was an opportunity he simply could not pass up. Beyond his domestic success, Dawson brings considerable pedigree from his previous work within the England setup as a performance pathway coach and assistant with the white-ball squads.

The arrival of Foster into Fleming’s red-ball staff has created a ripple effect elsewhere in the coaching structure. Taylor, the former England Women’s wicketkeeper who performed coaching duties across formats during the summer, will step back from her broader role. Taylor’s summer assignment had drawn high praise, notably for her specialized work with Jamie Smith on the art of standing up to the stumps for seam bowling, specifically assisting Ollie Robinson during the Pakistan series.

However, Key was quick to emphasize that white-ball cricket remains an immense priority for the England hierarchy with the 2027 World Cup looming in South Africa. He pointed to the T20I squad’s rise to the number-one spot in the International Cricket Council rankings as clear testament to the impact Taylor has had within McCullum’s white-ball set-up.

Key further clarified that, with the exception of Pietersen’s specialist white-ball batting mentor role, the new coaching appointments do not carry rigid, formal designations. According to the managing director, avoiding strict job titles prevents coaches from being pigeonholed and ultimately enhances their career progression, keeping the door open for them to one day contend for the head coach position themselves.

The lack of domestic English coaching candidates had been a frequent criticism leveled against the England and Wales Cricket Board when they were previously scouting for McCullum’s successor. However, Key believes that narrative is already shifting, particularly following the appointment of Jonathan Trott to the England Lions head coach role after his stellar international success with Afghanistan.

"There’s a number of coaches in our game that would have an opportunity in the future to coach England," Key said. "These are the guys that have been in our set-up a little bit. They’ve come through the system—whether it’s Under-19 cricket or Jonathan Trott doing the Lions—we’ve got the best of what this country has to offer so far. So it’d be a great experience for them."

Alongside Dawson’s spin-bowling responsibilities and Troy Cooley’s ongoing tenure as fast-bowling lead, Mike Yardy has been appointed to a separate role as elite national batting lead. These targeted national roles are specifically designed to nurture and refine elite talent within English domestic cricket, ultimately broadening the depth and quality of world-class international players available for selection.

With the backroom jigsaw puzzle now largely in place, England’s coaching hierarchy turns its immediate attention to the winter fixtures, where Fleming’s red-ball outfit and McCullum’s white-ball group will simultaneously face the fierce challenges of South Africa and Australia.
