Jasprit Bumrah Returns for New Zealand Tests; Shreyas Iyer Named Captain for ODI Series Finale

As the Indian cricket team gears up for a challenging tour of New Zealand, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a series of strategic squad rotations designed to balance immediate competitive demands with long-term fitness goals. The most significant development is the return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to the Test arena, while the ODI setup will see a split captaincy approach to manage player workloads ahead of a packed international calendar.

Bumrah’s Strategic Return to the Test Fold

Jasprit Bumrah, who has been carefully managed by the Indian team’s think tank—led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and the national selection committee—is set to spearhead the attack in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. The first Test, scheduled to commence in Wellington on November 19, marks Bumrah’s first appearance in the longest format of the game since November 2025.

Bumrah’s absence from the ODI squad is a deliberate measure to ensure his physical readiness for the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy on home soil early next year, as well as the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled for October and November in Africa. The team management has been vocal about the necessity of protecting their premier fast bowler to ensure he remains at peak fitness for the most demanding assignments.

Bumrah, who recently tasted success at the Asian Games in Japan, where he helped India secure a gold medal, has been conducting his routine training at his home in Ahmedabad. He is slated to report to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru shortly to undergo final fitness drills and workload conditioning before departing for New Zealand.

Managing Injury Concerns and Returning Personnel

While the Test squad welcomes back its lead pacer, the team continues to navigate fitness hurdles among key players. Rishabh Pant, who suffered a side strain while captaining Rest of India during the recent Irani Cup, is currently on the road to recovery. The injury, sustained while playing a sweep shot in the first innings, ruled him out of the first two unofficial Tests against New Zealand A. However, the medical team is optimistic about his progress, and he is expected to feature in the third unofficial Test in Lincoln, scheduled from November 7 to November 10. This match will serve as a vital fitness test for the wicketkeeper-batter as he prepares for the senior team’s tour.

In the fast-bowling department, Prasidh Krishna has been named in the Test squad, though his inclusion in the preceding ODI series remains contingent upon passing final fitness assessments. Medical scans have provided a positive outlook, confirming only a left hamstring strain rather than a tear. Prasidh has spent the last fortnight engaged in intensive strength and conditioning work, including mobility drills and recovery therapy, in hopes of being available for the first three ODIs.

The Test squad also sees the return of Akash Deep, whose consistent form in the Irani Cup and the opening round of the Ranji Trophy for Bengal has earned him a recall. Joining him is Anshul Kamboj, who previously made his Test debut in Manchester in July 2025. These additions, supported by the presence of Mohammed Siraj and the versatile seam-bowling allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, provide India with significant depth in their pace battery.

However, there was no place for spinner Manav Suthar, despite his impressive showing in Sri Lanka, where he topped the wicket charts with 16 scalps in four innings. Instead, the selectors have opted for the established spin-bowling allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, alongside the wrist-spin expertise of Kuldeep Yadav, to tackle the conditions in New Zealand. Furthermore, B Sai Sudharsan has earned a recall to the Test squad following his recovery from a toe injury that kept him sidelined during the Sri Lanka series, providing the team with a reliable backup option for the batting lineup.

Shreyas Iyer to Lead in ODI Series Finale

The ODI component of the tour will see a transition in leadership. While Shubman Gill is confirmed to captain the side for the first three ODIs, Shreyas Iyer will take the reins for the final two matches of the series. This decision aligns with the broader rotation policy, as senior players and those pivotal to the Test setup are gradually withdrawn from the ODI fray to focus on the red-ball transition.

In addition to the captaincy change, the squad composition for the final two ODIs reflects a shift in focus. Players such as Gill, KL Rahul, and Anshul Kamboj will depart after the third match to ramp up their preparations for the Test series. This has opened the door for new faces and returning talent. Wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra, who has been in prolific form across formats throughout the current season, has received his maiden international call-up for the final two ODIs. Similarly, Auqib Nabi, who debuted during the West Indies series in Guwahati, will rejoin the squad for the series conclusion.

Arshdeep Singh, who was omitted from the ODI setup for the West Indies series to focus on T20I cricket, makes his return to the 50-over format. His last ODI appearance dates back to July, when he featured against England at Lord’s. Ravindra Jadeja, who participated in the ODI series against West Indies, has been omitted from the ODI squads for this tour to focus on his Test responsibilities.

Squad Compositions

The BCCI has outlined three distinct squads to navigate the tour, reflecting the complexity of managing players across formats and fitness timelines:

India Test Squad against New Zealand: Shubman Gill (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul (vice-captain), Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Anshul Kamboj, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj.

India Squad for the First Three ODIs: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna (subject to fitness), and Kuldeep Yadav.

India Squad for the Fourth and Fifth ODIs: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Kumar Kushagra (wicketkeeper), Mohammed Siraj, Yash Thakur, and Kuldeep Yadav.

As the squad members prepare for their respective departures, the focus remains firmly on ensuring that each player reaches New Zealand in optimal physical condition. The combination of established veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI setup, alongside the integration of emerging talents like Kumar Kushagra and the strategic return of Jasprit Bumrah, suggests that India is looking to balance short-term series success with the long-term objective of building a squad capable of dominating across all three formats. With the first ODI fast approaching and the Test series looming in Wellington, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining the composition and morale of the team for the upcoming international cycle.
