Nissanka’s absence leaves a gaping hole at the top of the batting order for Sri Lanka, a side that has experienced a turbulent and inconsistent run of form throughout the year, particularly in limited-overs cricket. Selectors had initially included him in the 16-member squad for the Pakistan tri-series on the condition that he would pass subsequent fitness assessments. However, with the tournament fast approaching and the opener still feeling the effects of the hamstring strain, the team management opted to withdraw him from the squad to avoid aggravating the injury further, prioritizing his long-term recovery and availability for upcoming red-ball assignments.

To fill the vacancy left by Nissanka, the Sri Lankan selection panel has called up Lahiru Udara. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has accumulated experience across the domestic circuit and has previously represented Sri Lanka in five Test matches and seven T20 internationals, though he is yet to make his official debut in the One-Day International format.

Udara’s inclusion in the white-ball squad follows a period of mixed fortunes in the international arena. Having recently been omitted from the Test squad selected for the forthcoming red-ball series against Pakistan, the upcoming ODIs represent a golden opportunity for the veteran batter to cement his place at the highest level of international cricket. His recent omission from the Test side was a subject of considerable discussion among pundits and fans alike. Udara had recorded a magnificent 188 against the West Indies in July, a testament to his undeniable technical capability and appetite for big runs. However, his form in the longest format dipped sharply thereafter, failing to pass the thirty-run mark in his subsequent five Test innings, which ultimately prompted selectors to look elsewhere for the red-ball series.

Despite his struggles in Test cricket, Udara’s explosive abilities in the shorter formats of the game have kept him firmly in the national conversation. He recently delivered a scintillating performance during the opening T20I against Pakistan, smashing 91 runs off just 55 deliveries. That innings stood out as the highest individual score by any Sri Lankan batter during the series, underscoring his capacity to dictate terms to opposing bowling attacks and anchor an innings under pressure. Across his wider List A career, Udara boasts a solid batting average of 32.09, accompanied by a respectable strike rate of 85.97 across 97 innings, underlining his pedigree in domestic fifty-over cricket.

The loss of Pathum Nissanka, meanwhile, is an acute setback for a Sri Lankan team desperately searching for consistency and momentum. Since the beginning of 2024, Nissanka has been the bedrock of Sri Lanka’s batting line-up in the fifty-over format, shouldering the scoring burden alongside newly appointed captain Kusal Mendis. In that timeframe, only Mendis has managed to outscore Nissanka’s impressive tally of 1,324 ODI runs, highlighting just how integral the right-handed opener has become to the team’s tactical blueprint. His ability to anchor the innings, rotate the strike effectively, and accelerate against both pace and spin has made him irreplaceable at the top of the order.

With the tri-series also featuring the host nation Pakistan and England, the competition is expected to be fierce from the very first match. The tournament schedule gets underway on Sunday, with Pakistan and Sri Lanka locking horns in the opening fixture. For Sri Lanka, adjusting to the sudden absence of one of their most dependable run-scorers will require a collective effort from the rest of the batting unit, while putting the spotlight firmly on newcomers and fringe players like Udara to step up in high-pressure conditions.

Even as the tri-series begins, attention will also remain fixed on Nissanka’s rehabilitation progress. The explosive opener is currently locked in a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the opening Test match of the tour against Pakistan, which is scheduled to get underway in Rawalpindi on November 9. Medical staff and team management will monitor his recovery closely over the coming days, knowing that getting their premier batsman back onto the field is vital for both their white-ball stability and red-ball ambitions.
