Pathum Nissanka’s Return Headlines Sri Lanka’s Test Squad for Pakistan Series

Pathum Nissanka’s highly anticipated return to the red-ball fold provides a downtrodden Sri Lanka with a timely and much-needed boost, while potential debuts loom on the horizon for young wicketkeeper Anjala Bandara and express seamer Eshan Malinga. The trio has been officially named in Sri Lanka’s robust 15-man squad for the upcoming and fiercely contested two-Test series against Pakistan, signaling a strategic blend of seasoned campaigners and exciting fresh talent as the team looks to turn its fortunes around in the international arena.

The 22-year-old Bandara is heavily tipped to break into the starting playing XI during the series. This transition is expected following Kusal Mendis’ recent promotion to the team captaincy, a leadership shift that leaves the longtime Test wicketkeeper poised to play solely as a specialist batter, thereby opening up glovework duties behind the stumps. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Malinga introduces an intriguing dynamic to the squad, though his immediate presence in the playing XI remains slightly less certain. He will have to contend for a spot within a competitive pace contingent that features established names such as Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Milan Rathnayaka, and Dilshan Madushanka. Madushanka notably makes his return to the national setup after having been omitted from the squad named for the second Test against India earlier in the year. Furthermore, experienced campaigner Dinesh Chandimal, who was forced to miss the second India Test due to an untimely injury, has successfully recovered and returns to reinforce the batting order.

Malinga’s inclusion in the squad comes at a crucial juncture for Sri Lanka, whose red-ball fast-bowling stocks have experienced a noticeable dip and a general lack of express pace in recent seasons. Former captain Dhananjaya de Silva, who has retained his place in the squad, had previously been vocal during the India tour regarding the team’s pressing need for more genuine, express seamers in the playing XI. Aside from Lahiru Kumara, who is consistently capable of clocking speeds in the 140kph range, the team’s other pace options have historically tended to hover around the low 130s. Malinga, however, possesses the raw physical capability to match Kumara on the speed gun, a valuable attribute that could strongly point toward him earning his maiden Test cap on the tour.

Nissanka's return headlines SL's Test squad against Pakistan

Bandara has established himself as a player of genuine promise and immense potential ever since making his professional debut in 2022. His impressive domestic resume across 31 first-class matches has yielded an outstanding 2,239 runs at a phenomenal average of 65.85, underlining his consistency and capability at the crease. Prior to this selection, there had been a noticeable clamour among passionate cricket fans for the Colombo Cricket Club wicketkeeper to be fast-tracked into the squad to face India, though that particular spot was ultimately awarded to Dickwella for that series.

The remainder of the squad pans out largely as expected by pundits and supporters alike, with Nissanka’s triumphant return undoubtedly serving as the primary headline. Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who made his international debut earlier this year during the series against India, has successfully retained his place in the squad ahead of the more experienced Lahiru Udara. However, if the dynamic Bandara does take up the wicketkeeping duties as widely anticipated, it could mean that Dhananjaya de Silva finds himself as the odd man out in a crowded batting lineup, given that Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Sonal Dinusha, and Kusal Mendis appear to be virtually assured of their spots in the playing XI. For their spin-bowling department, Sri Lanka will rely on the established combination of Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha to exploit subcontinental conditions.

The opening match of this high-stakes series will get underway in Rawalpindi on November 9, where Sri Lanka will hope their revamped squad can make an immediate impact.
