Sabbhineni Meghana, the prominent top-order batter who represented India on the international stage and tasted domestic success across various major tournaments, has officially announced her retirement from all formats of cricket at the age of 30. The versatile cricketer, whose journey in the sport spanned well over a decade from her early domestic breakthroughs to the grand stages of international fixtures and the Women’s Premier League (WPL), confirmed her decision through an emotional and reflective statement shared across her social media channels.

Meghana, who played the last of her 20 international white-ball matches for India in October 2022, was most recently seen in action during the 2025 season of the Women’s Premier League. Her announcement marks the definitive closing chapter of an impactful playing career, yet she has made it abundantly clear that her association with the sport is far from over. As she steps away from active professional competition, she leaves behind a legacy defined by resilience, steady contributions at the top of the order, and memorable performances in both the blue of India and the colors of her domestic and franchise teams.

Reflecting on her journey and the difficult decision to hang up her boots, Meghana expressed profound gratitude for the experiences cricket afforded her. In her heartfelt retirement note, she captured the essence of what the sport meant to her throughout her formative years and professional tenure. "As I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket as a player, my heart is overflowing with gratitude," she wrote. "The field has been my second home, teaching me resilience, humility, and giving me memories and friendships that I will carry for a lifetime."

Hailing from the state of Andhra Pradesh, Meghana’s path to the national team was paved through years of dedicated toil in domestic cricket, where she consistently proved her mettle as a reliable top-order batter capable of anchoring an innings and accelerating when required. Her international journey officially commenced in November 2016 when she earned her maiden cap for India in a Twenty20 International against the West Indies, played in her home country in Vijayawada. On her debut outing, she contributed 17 runs from 16 deliveries in a hard-fought encounter that ultimately ended in a 31-run defeat for the side.

While her T20I debut arrived in 2016, opportunities in the fifty-over format took considerably longer to materialize. Her One Day International debut came much later, in February 2022, during a challenging tour of New Zealand in Queenstown. In her first ODI appearance, she managed just 4 runs from 14 balls, a modest start that might have unsettled a less resolute player. However, Meghana showcased her true potential and mental toughness in the subsequent two games of the same series, responding with brilliant knocks of 49 off 50 balls and 61 off 41 balls respectively, proving her capability to perform against top-tier international bowling attacks in demanding conditions.

Despite those impressive back-to-back half-centuries and notable displays of intent, those three ODIs she played on the New Zealand tour remained her only appearances in the fifty-over format for the national team. Over the course of those three matches, she accumulated a total of 114 runs, establishing an impressive baseline that highlighted what she could achieve given a sustained run in the side.

S Meghana retires from all formats at 30

In the shortest format of the game, Meghana featured in 17 T20Is for India. Across these appearances, she scored 258 runs at a strike rate of 102.78, anchoring the innings when early wickets fell and providing crucial momentum at the top. Her T20I career was highlighted by a well-crafted half-century, and she remained a vibrant part of the national white-ball setup during various bilateral series and multi-nation tournaments, including notable matches where her aggressive intent in the powerplay gave India vital advantages.

Even as her international appearances became less frequent following her final match in October 2022, Meghana continued to showcase her cricketing prowess on the domestic circuit and subsequently in the Women’s Premier League. The inception of the WPL provided a fresh avenue for established and rising Indian stars to showcase their talent on a grand global platform. Meghana embraced this new era of women’s cricket with enthusiasm, playing three seasons in the marquee tournament.

During her time in the WPL, she initially represented the Gujarat Giants franchise, where she brought her wealth of domestic experience to bear in the top order. Following her stint with the Giants, she moved to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, representing the franchise for two productive years. Her tenure with Royal Challengers Bengaluru culminated in a historic triumph when she was a proud member of the squad that clinched the prestigious WPL title in the 2024 season, adding a major franchise trophy to her cabinet and experiencing the jubilation of championship success alongside some of the biggest names in the sport.

As she transitions away from the playing field, Meghana’s connection to the sport remains unbreakable. Rather than distancing herself from the game that shaped her identity, she intends to channel her extensive experience into nurturing the next wave of talent. In her retirement message, she elaborated on this commitment to the future of women’s cricket. "While my cricket days come to an end, my bond with cricket will never break," she wrote. "I will always stay deeply connected to the game and intend to dedicate my life to giving back to the sport, mentoring the next generation, and serving the game that gave me everything."

Meghana’s departure from professional cricket closes a significant chapter for Andhra Pradesh cricket and the broader Indian women’s domestic ecosystem. Throughout her career, she served as an inspiration for young girls in her home state and across the country who aspired to pull on the Indian jersey. By transitioning immediately into mentoring roles, she ensures that her deep understanding of batting techniques, match temperament, and the mental fortitude required to succeed at the highest level will be directly passed down to aspiring cricketers.

Her journey from domestic stalwart in Andhra Pradesh to international representative and WPL champion encapsulates the rapid evolution and professionalization of women’s cricket in India over the past decade. As S Meghana steps into this new phase of her life and career, she leaves behind a respected playing legacy defined by commitment, fighting spirit, and an enduring love for the game of cricket.
