Legspinner Rehan Ahmed has been sent to the Caribbean for the England Lions’ upcoming white-ball series against West Indies A, following his omission from Brendon McCullum’s senior white-ball squads for the looming tours of Pakistan and Australia.
The 22-year-old Ahmed, who recently put pen to paper on a new central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), finds himself at a pivotal career crossroads. Despite his recent commitment to the national setup, Ahmed failed to fully convince selectors when given an opportunity during the two-day international matches against Sri Lanka last month. Consequently, the selection panel opted to leave him out of the senior touring parties, directing him instead toward the Lions setup to regain form, refine his craft, and force his way back into national contention.
The England Lions are scheduled to travel to St Kitts and Nevis next month to play a comprehensive white-ball schedule consisting of three T20 fixtures and five 50-over matches. This upcoming tour will mark a significant milestone for former England batter Jonathan Trott, who takes charge of the Lions as their new head coach following the resignation of Andrew Flintoff.
Trott made it clear that Ahmed’s inclusion in the developmental squad is intended to serve as a catalyst for his international resurgence. Speaking about the broader philosophy behind the Lions program under his leadership, Trott emphasized the importance of maintaining a competitive environment where fringe and dropped players can reignite their international aspirations.
"I want to create a culture where England players will benefit from coming back and working in this environment to push for national team selection across formats and by performing and helping the Lions to win games of cricket," Trott explained. He added that he is genuinely excited to begin working with a hugely talented group of players, noting that the Lions program played a foundational role in his own illustrious playing career. Now, as head coach, his primary responsibility is preparing the next generation of younger players for the rigorous demands of international cricket.
The Lions squads feature a strong contingent of emerging and established talent, including nine players who have recently secured England deals for the 2026-27 cycle. Among them, Ahmed, Dan Lawrence, and seam bowler Sam Cook are tied to full central contracts, while Mason Crane, James Coles, Thomas Rew, Ben McKinney, Eddie Jack, and Liam Patterson-White have all been awarded developmental contracts.
The integration of centrally contracted and developmental players into the Lions setup aligns closely with a broader strategic shift articulated by Rob Key, England’s managing director. Key noted that the ECB has been transparent with players signing developmental contracts, making it clear that they are expected to make themselves readily available for Lions tours. This expectation stands even if accepting national developmental duties comes at the cost of lucrative domestic franchise league deals during the winter window.
Emphasizing the value of the developmental pathway, Key pointed out that Lions cricket is massive for the growth of English talents, particularly in the 50-over format. Because domestic scheduling heavily favors T20 cricket, the 50-over games provided by the Lions setup offer crucial experience in a format where young players otherwise receive limited exposure.

The logistics of the upcoming Caribbean tour will require some mid-series shuffling of personnel. Coles, Jack, and Rew are scheduled to depart from the Lions tour after the conclusion of the third match of the five-game one-day series. From there, they will travel directly to Australia to link up with the senior squad for England’s upcoming T20I series. Meanwhile, Asa Tribe’s availability for the opening phase of the T20 fixtures may be impacted by international commitments with Jersey, as he has been named in their squad for upcoming Challenge League fixtures in Kenya, which form a vital part of the qualification pathway for next year’s 50-over World Cup.
The leadership responsibilities within the Lions squads highlight a generational shift in English cricket. Thomas Rew has been named captain for the T20 fixtures, a well-deserved reward following his impressive leadership of the England Under-19s team all the way to the World Cup final in Zimbabwe earlier this year. His older brother, James Rew, has also secured a place in both the T20 and 50-over squads, despite missing out on a developmental contract with the ECB during the recent contracting cycle. Ben Mayes, another standout alumnus of the Under-19 World Cup squad, has likewise earned selection across both formats.
Other notable inclusions feature Worcestershire seamer Adam Finch, who has earned his maiden Lions call-up following a string of standout performances in the T20 Blast. Conversely, Yorkshire allrounder Matt Revis—another player who recently signed a developmental contract—was forced to miss out on selection after reportedly undergoing Achilles surgery.
The winter schedule for the England Lions is exceptionally busy. Beyond the upcoming white-ball tour of the Caribbean, the side is slated to travel to South Africa between November 25 and December 23, followed by a tour of Sri Lanka from February 18 to March 14. The South African leg will notably feature two four-day matches, offering valuable red-ball experience to aspiring Test candidates.
The significance of the Caribbean fixtures has also been underscored by regional administrators. Cricket West Indies (CWI) Chief Executive Chris Dehring noted during the recent cancellation announcement of the West Indies regional Super50 competition that the Lions’ visit will provide prospective ODI players with an invaluable platform to enhance their credentials ahead of next year’s World Cup qualifiers.
