Former Zimbabwe fast bowler and international umpire Sarah Dambanevana has passed away at the age of 36. Her death occurred in Harare on Monday, plunging the country’s cricketing fraternity and the wider global sports community into mourning. According to an official release issued by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), Dambanevana had been receiving continuous medical care in the hospital ever since she underwent a medical procedure earlier this year in March.

Dambanevana leaves behind a remarkable legacy that spanned two distinct and successful phases within the sport: first as a committed, hard-working fast bowler who represented her country on the international stage during the formative years of modern Zimbabwean women’s cricket, and later as a pioneering umpire who broke through historical barriers to officiate at the absolute highest levels of world cricket. Her sudden passing at such a young age has left an indelible void in the hearts of her teammates, colleagues, players, and administrators alike.

Having transitioned seamlessly from playing to officiating, Dambanevana’s senior international umpiring career officially commenced on September 2, 2023. From that moment onward, her trajectory on the global circuit was nothing short of meteoric. Her sharp decision-making, calm demeanor under pressure, and profound understanding of the laws of the game quickly earned her recognition among the elite ranks of international match officials.

Her capabilities were swiftly rewarded with major assignments on the global stage. Dambanevana went on to officiate at the prestigious ICC Women’s T20 World Cup held in 2024 in the United Arab Emirates. Following that success, she earned a spot as part of the officiating team for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup held across India and Sri Lanka. During that tournament, she proudly participated as a member of the historic all-female panel of match officials, a milestone achievement that underscored the shifting paradigms of leadership and officiating equity within international cricket.

Long before standing in senior women’s global fixtures, Dambanevana made history in early 2023. She was selected to officiate in the high-profile final clash between powerhouse teams India and England at the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup hosted in South Africa. By taking charge of the middle for that championship match, she carved her name into the history books as the very first Zimbabwean woman to ever umpire a World Cup final, setting an extraordinary precedent for match officials coming out of Associate and Full Member developing cricketing nations alike.

Over the course of her distinguished officiating career, Dambanevana stood in a total of 63 senior international matches. This impressive tally comprised 42 women’s T20 Internationals, 11 women’s One Day Internationals, and 10 men’s T20 Internationals. In addition to her heavy workload on the international circuit, she remained deeply committed to grassroots and domestic cricket within her homeland, regularly officiating in domestic fixtures and global youth tournaments where she helped nurture the next generation of players and officials.

Her journey into the upper echelons of global umpiring was preceded by her active playing career. Between 2009 and 2014, Dambanevana proudly represented Zimbabwe as a fast bowler, playing a vital role in the national team setup during a challenging period of growth for the women’s game. Among her fondest memories on the field was her participation in the crucial ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier held in 2011, where she tested her mettle against some of the finest cricketers in the world. After hanging up her playing boots, she did not step away from the game; instead, she redirected her passion toward officiating, joining the ICC development panel of umpires in 2022 to formalize her ambitions of standing on the world stage from the other side of the stumps.

Tributes poured in from across the cricketing world following the announcement of her passing, led by Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani. In an emotional statement, Mukuhlani praised her immense contributions to the sport, both as an athlete and as an official who brought immense pride to the African nation.

"Sarah served Zimbabwe with distinction, first as a player and then as an umpire whose ability earned her a place on the world stage," ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said. "Watching her stand in a World Cup final was a moment of immense pride for our cricket community and our country. She showed young Zimbabwean women that they belong at the highest levels of the game, including in roles where opportunities had long been limited."

Mukuhlani further elaborated on the profound cultural impact Dambanevana had during her lifetime, noting how her trailblazing path dismantled long-standing barriers and encouraged others to dream without limits.

"Through her achievements, she opened doors and gave others the confidence to pursue their own ambitions," Mukuhlani added. "We will remember her dedication, her professionalism and her willingness to help others grow. Her passing leaves a painful void in our cricket family, but the example she set will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps."

The loss of Sarah Dambanevana at just 36 years old marks a poignant and somber chapter for Zimbabwe Cricket and the global umpiring fraternity. As the sporting community comes to terms with her untimely departure, her remarkable journey from a fast bowler representing her country in the qualifiers to a globally respected umpire officiating world cup finals remains a testament to her extraordinary character, work ethic, and enduring love for the game of cricket.
