Rehan Ahmed Urged to Push for England Recall with Lions Tour After White-Drop

Legspinner Rehan Ahmed has been selected for the England Lions squad to tour the Caribbean after losing his place in Brendon McCullum’s senior white-ball sides. The 22-year-old will travel to St Kitts and Nevis next month for a series consisting of three T20 fixtures and five 50-over matches, marking Jonathan Trott’s first assignment as head coach of the Lions.

Ahmed’s inclusion in the developmental setup comes after he failed to make a lasting impression during two One-Day Internationals against Sri Lanka last month. Despite recently signing a new central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), he missed selection for the senior team’s upcoming white-ball tours to Pakistan and Australia. The ECB has instead opted to place him in both Lions squads, where he will look to rediscover his best form and force his way back into national team calculations across multiple formats.

The Lions will be led by Thomas Rew, who will captain the T20 side, and Dan Lawrence, who will take charge of the 50-over team. Trott, who succeeds Andrew Flintoff as the Lions head coach this winter, outlined a clear objective for players returning to the developmental side. He emphasized that the environment is designed to help established and fringe internationals hone their skills, regain confidence, and demonstrate their readiness to contribute to winning cricket at the highest level.

Trott expressed enthusiasm about working with a talented group of emerging cricketers as they prepare for the rigors of international competition. Having experienced the Lions program firsthand during his own playing days, the former England batsman highlighted the crucial role the setup plays in bridging the gap between domestic county cricket and the international arena, helping younger players understand the demands and expectations of representing their country.

The touring party reflects a strong emphasis on players who have recently committed their futures to the national setup through central and development contracts. The squads feature nine individuals who have secured England deals for the 2026-27 cycle. While Ahmed, Lawrence, and seam bowler Sam Cook are tied to full central contracts, players such as Mason Crane, James Coles, Thomas Rew, Ben McKinney, Eddie Jack, and Liam Patterson-White are included on development contracts.

The ECB has placed significant emphasis on the importance of the Lions program in recent weeks. Managing Director Rob Key noted that players signing development contracts are expected to prioritize Lions tours, even if it means missing out on potential lucrative franchise opportunities during the winter months. Key underscored the particular value of 50-over cricket within the Lions schedule, noting that it provides valuable exposure to a format that young players rarely get to play in sufficient quantities at the domestic level.

Logistical demands will also shape the makeup of the touring party as schedules overlap. Coles, Jack, and Thomas Rew are slated to leave the Lions tour after the conclusion of the third 50-over match to join the senior England squad in Australia for the upcoming T20I series. Meanwhile, Asa Tribe’s availability for the opening T20 fixtures could be complicated by his commitments to Jersey’s squad for their upcoming Challenge League matches in Kenya, which serve as part of the qualification pathway for the next 50-over World Cup.

Thomas Rew’s appointment as T20 captain rewards his impressive leadership earlier this year, when he guided the England Under-19 team to the World Cup final in Zimbabwe. His older brother, James Rew, has been named in both the T20 and 50-over squads after missing out on an ECB development contract. Ben Mayes, another standout from the Under-19 World Cup campaign, has also earned selection across both formats.

Among the notable additions is Worcestershire seamer Adam Finch, who has received his first-ever Lions call-up following a string of strong performances in the T20 Blast. Conversely, Yorkshire allrounder Matt Revis—who also recently signed a development contract—was forced to miss out on the tour after undergoing surgery on his Achilles.

The upcoming assignment in the Caribbean is part of a busy winter schedule for the England Lions, who are also scheduled to undertake tours to South Africa between November 25 and December 23, and to Sri Lanka from February 18 to March 14. The South African leg is set to feature two four-day matches, broadening the developmental scope for the players involved.

Cricket West Indies Chief Executive Chris Dehring previously noted that with the cancellation of the region’s regional Super50 competition, the Lions tour would offer vital preparation and exposure. He emphasized that the matches would provide prospective ODI players with an ideal platform to enhance their claims for selection ahead of upcoming global tournaments and World Cup qualifiers.
