RAIPUR — A vintage, masterclass performance from captain Harmanpreet Kaur, combined with another blistering knock from the dynamic Shafali Verma, propelled India to a commanding 92-run victory over Zimbabwe in the third and final T20I at Raipur. With this comprehensive win, India successfully completed a 3-0 clean sweep of the bilateral series, underlining their absolute dominance across all departments of the game.

Sent in to bat first after Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to field—a tactical choice by stand-in leadership aimed at testing the depth of the batting order—India racked up an imposing total of 216 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. The score stands as India’s joint-third-highest total in the history of women’s T20 international cricket. In response, Zimbabwe showed commendable grit through Sharne Mayers and Beloved Biza, but the towering target proved entirely out of reach. Despite some flashes of brilliance with the bat and some truly exceptional fielding highlights, the visiting side was restricted to 124 for 7, unable to seriously threaten India’s grip on the match at any stage of the chase.

Shafali’s Splendid Run Continues

With regular captain Smriti Mandhana opting to sit out the batting innings to allow the middle order crucial game time in the middle, the tactical reshuffle saw Anushka promoted to open the innings alongside the explosive Shafali Verma, while Mandhana herself did not feature with the bat on the day.

The opening partnership required a brief period of watchful containment as the visitors looked to exploit any early movement. Shafali took a few deliveries to adjust to the pitch before announcing her arrival in style, launching Tendai Makusha over deep backward square leg for a towering six in the second over. At the other end, Anushka adopted a similarly cautious approach before finding her timing, striking Nomvelo Sibanda for a pair of crisply executed boundaries in the third over.

The two openers soon found their rhythm, accelerating rapidly as they took Makusha’s next over for 16 runs. The flurry of boundaries brought up India’s 50-run partnership in just the fifth oven. However, just as the partnership threatened to take the game completely away from Zimbabwe in the powerplay, Nyasha Gwanzura intervened with a moment of brilliance. Gwanzura pulled off a superb, leaping catch at midwicket to cut short Anushka’s promising 20-ball stay at the crease.

The dismissal brought Niki Prasad to the crease at No. 3, but the incoming batter struggled to make a meaningful impact. Prasad fell victim to another piece of exceptional fielding, brilliantly orchestrated by Gwanzura and finished by Loryn Phiri. Gwanzura tempted Prasad with a teasing delivery wide of the off stump, prompting an expansive drive that resulted in a thick slice. Phiri, running hard to her left from mid-off, plucked the ball out of the air on the rebound to send Prasad back to the pavilion.

The loss of two quick partners did nothing to curb Shafali’s aggressive instincts. Instead, the young opener dramatically shifted gears, dismantling the bowling attack with a breathtaking sequence of three sixes and a boundary across five consecutive deliveries. The onslaught rushed her to her 23rd T20I half-century off just 26 balls, marking her remarkable ninth fifty of the calendar year.

Vintage Harman on Show

If the top order laid a solid foundation, Harmanpreet Kaur provided the explosive fireworks that turned a very good total into an unreachable mountain. The Indian skipper had experienced a quiet start to the series, falling for just 1 in the opening T20I and not getting an opportunity to bat in the second encounter. But upon finally securing extended time in the middle, she made every single ball count.

Harmanpreet, Shafali fifties and Nandani three-for seal 3-0 series sweep for India

Coming in at No. 4, Harmanpreet initially took her time, accumulating just a single boundary from the first 12 deliveries she faced. Once she adjusted to the pace and bounce of the Raipur pitch, however, she switched gears in emphatic, vintage fashion. She targeted Chigora’s over ruthlessly, plundering 20 runs from it through a combination of two exquisitely timed fours and two thunderous sixes.

Even as Shafali eventually departed after her fine knock, Harmanpreet continued to find the boundary with remarkable regularity. She punished Sibanda with three boundaries in a single over, a sequence during which she also brought up her 19th T20I half-century. The highlight of her innings, and perhaps the match, came when she unleashed two of her biggest hits against Beloved Biza. Charging down the track with menacing intent, she deposited an 82-metre six over long-on, before repeating the aggressive charge on the very next ball to launch an even bigger, 89-metre maximum.

India did suffer a minor wobble in terms of regular wickets tumbling around their captain towards the backend of the innings, with Richa Ghosh, Deepti Sharma, and Arundhati Reddy all perishing cheaply in pursuit of quick runs. Harmanpreet was stranded on 81 as she took strike for the very first ball of the final over. Though she could manage only 10 runs off that final over, her blistering knock remained untouched, finishing unbeaten on a magnificent 91 off just 41 balls, featuring 10 fours and five towering sixes—her second-highest individual score in T20I cricket.

Zimbabwe Fight to No Avail

Facing a daunting target of 217, Zimbabwe felt the mounting pressure from the very first ball of their innings. Gaud struck immediately with her opening delivery of the match as Kelis Ndhlovu chased a wide offering outside off and sliced it towards short extra cover. Prasad reacted sharply, diving swiftly to her right to claim an excellent catch. The trouble compounded in the second over when Nandani Sharma had Modester Mupachikwa caught behind by the wicketkeeper for just 1 run, leaving the visitors reeling at 2 for 2.

Refusing to surrender meekly, Sharne Mayers and Beloved Biza joined forces to orchestrate a cautious rebuilding operation. The pair recognized the necessity of prioritizing safe strike rotation over risky big hits given the steep required run rate. Mayers managed to clear the ropes twice alongside a boundary, helping the pair forge a gritty 50-run partnership. Despite their resistance, Zimbabwe could only crawl to 62 for 2 by the halfway mark of the innings, at which point the required run rate had skyrocketed to an imposing 15.50 runs per over.

Although the partnership offered Zimbabwe a brief glimmer of hope and showed admirable technical resolve, the steepness of the target remained insurmountable. Mayers attempted to inject some much-needed momentum into the chase, taking on Prema Rawat—who had been brought into the playing XI in place of N Shree Charani—for two sixes and a boundary. Mayers eventually brought up a hard-fought fifty off 45 deliveries in the 14th over.

Her resistance, however, was brought to an end in the subsequent over when she miscued a full, flighted delivery outside the off stump while reaching out for another ambitious aerial shot.

From that juncture, any realistic path to an unlikely victory evaporated for Zimbabwe. Biza fought valiantly to compile 44 runs, but the lower order collapsed under the weight of the scoreboard pressure. Arundhati Reddy and Deepti Sharma chipped in with a wicket each, while Nandani Sharma struck twice in a lethal final over to wrap up the innings. Zimbabwe were ultimately bowled out and restricted to 124 for 7, falling 92 runs short of their target and sealing India’s comprehensive series sweep in style.
